How to Choose the Right leveling kit for your F150
Before buying some leveling kits for your ford F150, you need to consider some things. They’re as follows.
Amount of Lift
You need to check your vehicle’s current suspension level before you go shopping. Whether you’re dealing with even or uneven suspension, how much of a lift will you need in the front and back end.
Compatibility
To know what type of kit you should be looking for, you need to know exactly what you need. If you end up buying a leveling kit that doesn’t fit your make and model, you won’t be able to work it on your vehicle.
To make sure that the product fits your vehicle, you need to match both the make, model, configuration, and year.
Leveling lift Kits Type
When you get to the market, you’ll come face to face with so many different choices that may send your head spinning.
However, you’ve got nothing to worry about. All you need to do is familiarize yourself with the types of leveling kits, and you’ll breeze through the buying process.
There are mainly three kinds of leveling kits. Knowing what they offer and what they lack will help you make the best decisions.
Suspension Lift Kits
The suspension lift kit will come in handy if you’re looking to raise your F150’s height. However, if you’re a little tight on your budget, the suspension lift kit may not be the best choice for you.
You may need to install some additional parts when using the suspension lift kit. For example, you may need to put in a lower skid plate, brake line brackets, or CV spacers, depending on the type of your kit.
Moreover, you may even need to modify your entire suspension system before you can install a suspension lift kit in your F150. But when all’s said and done, the suspension lift kit is the best choice for you if you don’t mind splurging a bit.
Body Lift Kits
If practicality is what you’re gunning for, the body lift kit may be your best bet. While they will have as much of a yield as their suspension lift counterparts, the body lift kit can raise your F150’s chassis from one to three inches. That way, you’ll have not only more ground clearance but also the freedom to use bigger tires.
Moreover, unlike its suspension lift counterparts, you can use the body lift kit without making any significant adjustments to your vehicle. That way, there’s a lower chance of failure in the installation process. Also, you can keep your expenses at the minimum level.
Leveling Lift Kits
If looks are what matters the most to you, you can’t go wrong with leveling lift kits. They can help you hide the obvious factory raking. However, if you’re thinking of towing or hauling, you should try using body or suspension lifts instead of leveling lift kits.
The leveling lift kits don’t cost as much as suspension kits, so they won’t set you back too much and upgrade your vehicle’s looks. Moreover, the installation process is relatively straightforward, so you can install the kit yourself if you want.
But, keep in mind that you need to have a basic understanding to get through the process without any professional help.
How To Install Leveling Kit F150
If you’re a DIYer and looking for a new project, installing your ford F150’s leveling kit should be right up your alley. The difficulty level of the process will depend entirely on your knowledge and the type of your leveling kit.
The installation process varies depending on the type of your leveling kit. While some kits can be bolted right in, others may need some additional parts to be accommodated.
You can take help from the instructions that come with your equipment. And here are some basic instructions that can help you get through the process smoothly.
Components
- 1-1/16-inch wrench
- 30mm socket
- 21mm socket
- 18mm socket
- 15mm socket
- Prying bar
- Breaker bar socket wrench
- Pitman arm puller (optional)
F150 Leveling Kit Installing Process
Step 01: Unbolt the Lug Nuts
Take out your 21mm socket and your socket wrench, and unscrew the lug nuts. An easy rule to follow when loosening the nuts is ‘righty tighty, lefty loosey.’
If you have the OEM wheels, take off the center cap first before you proceed.
Step 02: Raise the Front End
Before you start, make sure to place a wedge on one of the back-end wheels. Put the truck in neutral and jack up the front. Ensure not to engage the parking or the hand brake as you’ll need the back-end wheels to move.
Lift the front end high enough for you to remove the tires. After you’ve lifted the truck high enough, put two jack stands under the chassis to keep the car lifted. Remove the nuts and the tires in the front.
Step 03: Remove the Bolts
Use your 18mm socket to unscrew the sway bar. After you’ve unbolted it, take the bar off of the control arm.
Step 04: Loosen the Upper Ball Joint
Make sure to loosen the upper ball joint without taking it off. You can either pry it out with the pitman puller or hammer to pop the ball joint out of the spindle.
If you’re using a hammer, be careful not to hit the ball joint directly. Otherwise, you’ll end up damaging your suspension.
Step 05: Loosen the Lower Strut Bolt
Take your 30mm socket and place it over the lower strut bolt. Hold the nut with the 1-1/16-inch wrench.
If you can’t loosen it, you can use a power tool. If you can take it off, that’d be best. But, if you can’t altogether remove it, make sure to loosen it.
Step 06: Remove the Spindle
With the strut out of the way, place the jack under the lower control arm. That way, you can take off the nut from the upper ball joint. Use the pry bar to lift the control arm so you move the spindle out of the way.
Use ratchet straps to fix the spindle in one place so that it doesn’t swing around during the installation process.
Step 07: Remove Strut’s Top Nuts
Now you can use your 15mm socket to remove the nuts. There should be three of them. These nuts keep the strut’s head fixed on the bracket.
The jack will slowly bring the lower control arm down, and the strut assembly will follow it. Your job is to make sure that the parts don’t hit the ground.
Step 08: Spacer On the Top of the Strut
This step depends on the brand of your kit. So you need to refer to the instruction manual that came with your equipment.
If the spacer studs aren’t already in place, you may need to use an extended strut. If the spacer studs are already there, you’ll only need to bolt them to the strut.
Now do it for the other side, and you should be good to go!
